If you want to feel the SLDC spirit, all you have to do is join Girls’ Camp’s morning lineup! The energy is high and you never know what crazy costumes will be worn! In Girls’ Camp, independence, self-confidence and pride are promoted and it is where forever friendships are formed. Our SLDC girls learn that it is personal values and progress that are more important than perfection, and that they can build resiliency and be proud of who they are.
SLDC offers a happy, fun and caring environment for our older girls, enhancing their social and developmental skills while they mature at their own individual pace. Here is where our campers can “unplug”, and leave technology and impersonal communication at home. Our Senior Program for our oldest campers offers trips, community service opportunities, coed activities, a Big Sister Program and more. Group size averages 16 campers with 3 mature counselors per group. They are supervised by a Division Leader who oversees a specific age group and its staff, as well as the Director of Girls’ Camp who oversees Girls’ Camp in its entirety, both campers and staff.
Girls’ Camp’s daily lineups are filled with chants, spirit, and recognition of campers and staff for exhibiting the core of what our camp stands for! Their program continues to offer Instructional Swim (see Aquatics) every morning, along with a free swim period every afternoon. Campers’ daily schedules have a mix of sports, arts and Adventure Challenge activities along with their two periods of swim and lunch. All activities include in-depth instruction based on age and skill development. As they get older, the girls’ program will adjust to include activities that require more advanced skills, such as Archery, the pottery wheel in Ceramics, sewing machines at Fibercrafts, the Big Zip Line across our 5 acre lake, our Fitness Center’s strength and agility machines, and the Leap of Faith and Sky Climb elements of our Adventure Challenge area. Beginning in 3rd grade, our campers have the opportunity to select one Option (elective) activity that they will go to for one period each day that week. This allows them to experience a sport, art or adventure related activity of their choice on a more intensive level or simply because they enjoy it!
Special events are the highlight of each week. Of course our campers love our traditional camp special events like Color War, Spirit Day and Carnival, but it is during Girls’ Camp’s own special events that the campers and our staff shine. Girls’ Camp Song and Banner is a high point of the summer, and our campers love to embrace the summer’s theme when they dress up for the annual Girls’ Camp Breakfast. The Duct Tape Fashion Show, the Mascot Reveal and our friendly “rivalry” with Boys’ Camp keep the summer full of surprises!
SLDC looks forward to our Stars continuing their love of camp when they enter our Junior Training Program as 9th graders and take the first step towards becoming a homegrown member of our SLDC staff!
It is only fitting to end our description of Girls’ Camp the way they end each and every lineup of the summer… “GIRLS’ CAMP IS . . . STRONG LIKE BULL!”
